Hey Phil

I guess my priorities are a bit different than yours :)
Adium: great product.
NeoOffice: perhaps. OpenOffice runs native on aqua now so why go to the port? That said, I prefer iWork. It costs a bit more but more user-friendly. Why get a mac if you don't like user-friendly. I have not used MS Office in years either, but people who switch often like to have a familiar blue blankie.

Delocalizer: Really? A whole extra gig?! As in 0.5% of my HD space? I'm giddy.

Horrible, horrible advice.

First thing you do when you get a mac: Download NeoOffice and Adium.

After you install those two packages, you download Delocalizer (or 'Monolingual' I've seen but I haven't used it because Delocalizer was first) and use it to remove all non-english language files. You'll save over a gig of disc space simply by doing this.

I haven't used MS office in years; NeoOffice does everything, and it does it better than MS ever could. I especially like it's spreadsheet app which can apply effects to nonconsecutive cells which MS could not.

I just downloaded NeoOffice 3.0, but haven't used it much yet. I hear you on iWork, but I want to hold out & see if Apple will bundle it with ILife & the upcoming Snow Leopard Os as they did Leopard. I did hear that OpenOffice was buggy on Macs & followed several recommendations in downloading NeoOffice. At this point speed is not essential, since iWork08/09's Pages is only marginally faster to fire up. The interface is mainly personal preference, but I recently caved to fanboy raving & downloaded the Camino browser. Their 'aqua' interface looked more like IE4 or 5 than my FireFox3. There's a lot of apples to oranges comparisons in both examples: I think Camino's claims referred to an early Firefox2 version. I'll stick with Firefox, running Fasterfox Lite for now, and worry about true optimal (.vs claims online) about:config settings later. But I will try your link for OpenOffice, maybe even try a head-to-head. -E.

I used to use NeoOffice when OpenOffice did not have a pure Aqua port, and even in the early days of the Aqua port. IMO NeoOffice was very slow (this was on my older mac) as they had to rely a lot on java to get the aqua implementation going. The new OpenOffice mac port ( http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html ) is now out and I believe better and faster than NeoOffice.
That said, I paid Apple some more money and have been happy with the iWork suite with for the past few years. I also bought TextMate, a neat little text editor for those who do a lot of coding in text editors.

OpenOffice made a much less clunky (&much more Mac-like interface) called NeoOffice. It has multiple apps, like a spreadsheet, a drawing app, a presentation app, besides the word proc. It is a bit slow, so if you want to view Word formatted content from the web, I would recommend a much more svelte program like Bean 2.0, which fires up almost as fast at TextEdit.
