Rumour Mill: Blogger to be offered in Google Apps?

May 23rd, 2008 by Mickey Panayiotakis

Short and sweet.  I was browsing Google Help today to find the article on the differences between a Google account and Google Apps (a topic for another time), when I noticed this little tidbit:

For any product available through Google Accounts but not currently available in Google Apps (e.g., Blogger), you can use your Apps address without any issues. But in the future, when we add more products to Google Apps (hint! hint!)…

So…is Google inviting the rumor mill here or are they telling us that they’ll soon offer Blogger as a Google Apps product (as well as a Google Accounts product)?  If the latter, how will the Blogger product fit in with the existing Google Sites product for organizations?

Sounds great - one of the thing which was missing in Google Apps offering was Business Blogging. If this is done (they should do it ad-less) most small business will reap the benefits of blogging from single account.

I agree that they should do it ad-less…but I think they ought too do everything ad-less! I’m not wholly against ads though. Few blogs these days are completely ad-less (the bloggers themselves include ads for ad-revenue!), and from a reader perspective, it makes little difference if the ad revenue goes to Google or to the blogger. In the past few years, it seems that most users understand and accept the paid-for-by-ads paradigm. My guess is they’ll offer ad-less blogging for the premier accounts, at least. Blogger-placed ads will likely come from Google’s Adsense so Google gets the dough anyway!

As a google apps integrator, one of the things I am hearing from clients is that although they love the product, customers want to take full advantage of what Google offers from one centralized point. Hopefully Blogger comes into the fold sooner rather then later.
